Arktikum is a great place to start your trip to Lapland.
Situated on the banks of the great Ounasjoki River in the town centre of Rovaniemi is a Science Centre and Museum where you can experience the Arctic nature, explore Arctic cultures and the history of Lapland. Arktikum houses the Regional Museum of Lapland and the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland.
Arktikum is one of Rovaniemi’s best known landmarks. Its most visible part is the 172-metre long glass corridor, within which the natural Arctic light lives from one season to the next.
In the summertime, visitors are pampered by the sunshine, while wintertime has the flaming Northern Lights dance above its glass roof.
The Provincial Museum of Lapland’s Northern Ways Exhibition takes visitors on a journey through Lapland’s history, its people, Arctic nature and animals. This permanent exhibition has been divided into three geographical sections: Rovaniemi, South Lapland and North Lapland.
The exhibition shows visitors the Rovaniemi Market Event, the Lapland War, northern livelihoods, reindeer husbandry, the indigenous Sámi and the Petsamo area.
In Arktikum’s Arctic in Change exhibition, discover everyday life in the Arctic, the lifestyles of northern peoples, and the new challenges facing the region, such as climate change and globalisation.
This permanent exhibition highlights the multidisciplinary research of the Arctic interactively, including photos, videos and scale models that will fascinate the entire family.
Arktikum also has temporary exhibitions throughout the year. You can purchase Lappish handicrafts, jewellery and artistic items from Arktikum Shop to take home as a souvenir or gift. Arktikum’s restaurant serves special coffees and delicious weekday lunches.
