Railway Station Restaurant Assa

Rovaniemi’s railway station restaurant, affectionately known by the people of Rovaniemi as “Assa” is a railway station restaurant in the true sense of the term, as it serves travellers according to train arrival and departure times:
“We start serving breakfast at seven in the morning when the first train arrives, and we close our doors after the last train departs at nine in the evening”, tells entrepreneur Kari Pyykkönen.
Rail passengers are Assa’s largest customer group, but this ambiance-rich restaurant serves all hungry and thirsty guests. Breakfast is served through to 10 a.m. and the menus have plenty of dishes for all sorts of appetites.
“We serve a lot of sautéed reindeer, reindeer sausages and salmon soup, as we are in Lapland, but we also make tasty pizzas and delicious Caesar chicken”.
If you are after a snack with coffee, there are cinnamon rolls or loaf cakes baked on the premises.
A year ago the revamping of the restaurant saw the renewal of the Assa kitchen. Assa is one of Rovaniemi’s oldest restaurants, as it opened in the same spot back in 1954, that is 65 years ago.
Kari and and his wife Tiina have been running the Assa restaurant for almost two decades.
“There have been a lot of changes in rail travel during our time here. We have just received news that rail travel between Rovaniemi and Helsinki has increased during off-season times. That’s great news!”
